What is a kettlebell exactly? It looks like a cannonball with a handle on it. They come in different sizes and weights, depending on your strength and overall goals. The best benefit of a kettlebell workout is that it combines both strength and cardiovascular training.
You don’t have to decide:
Will I do cardio or strength training today?
With a kettlebell, you’ll do both!
Kettlebells are designed differently than dumbbells or a barbell because they are meant to be used in a more dynamic way. They are designed to get you moving, really moving. When you start swinging a kettlebell, your heart rate goes up in no time. It’s an awesome aerobic workout. Be prepared to work up a sweat because a kettlebell does that to you.
While using a kettlebell, you’re strengthening and toning your muscles with compound movements. This means that they work several muscles at the same time. Kettlebells are great to use in High Intensity Interval training (HIIT). With HIIT training, you will do short bursts of intense activity, alternating with short periods of rest. In a short time, you will be able to burn off a plenty of calories, making the kettlebell a great tool for your weight-loss goals.
Do you need to strengthen your core? Almost any kettlebell exercise out there will work. Kettlebell training strengthens your abs, obliques, lower back and spine muscles. Worried about your balance? Even if you’re doing a single arm exercise (example: single arm kettlebell swing), you’ll need the muscles of your core and shoulders to balance the kettlebell.
Not sure on what size kettlebell to use to start your workout? Choose one that will challenge you but not so heavy that it puts extra strain on your joints/muscles. If you start lighter, you can always work your way up to a heavier one. Kettlebells can be a great addition to your workouts, so get yourself a kettlebell and get started on a new routine!
