Changing your attitude about exercise will be the key to beginning your exercise program. While on the Biggest Loser Ranch, Courtney, my daughter and partner on the show, said something to me I will never forget…”It will take a while to change your body, but it only takes a split second to change your mind.”
With that being said, getting started with any change starts with our minds…our attitude about it.
Some believe they dislike exercise. So, for the remainder of this article we will just call it movement, because that is all it is. It “hurts” more not to. The best way to lose your ‘tude about it, is to reach deep down inside yourself and find your “powerful why”. Why do you really want to be healthy in life? You can’t lie to yourself about this…this is between you and you.
Why do we want to start? Knowing your “why” not only helps you start but, more importantly, helps you sustain your exercise program.
Let’s take steps, one at a time, no pun intended:
#1-Find YOUR “powerful why”! Whether it is fitting in a pair of jeans or getting on the ground to play with your grandchild… It is YOURS to own. Don’t look to others to motivate you, look to others for support. Find your motivation from within and then, it will be POWERFUL.
#2-Consult your physician. It is wise for anyone with major health risks, males aged 45 and older and females aged 55 and older to get clearance from their physician according to the American Council on Exercise.
#3-Get a fitness assessment so you can know your baseline- not compare yourself to others, but to monitor results and celebrate your victories.
#4-Use your baseline to set goals that are clear, realistic and concise. Share them with a friend or physician if you need extra accountability.
#5-Start slow but GO. Think about the long haul, not immediate results so you don’t get discouraged. This is a time to develop new habits. Some start too aggressive and tend not to stick with it. Start with 5-20 minute exercises. The best exercise is one that you will do…it is that simple. Walk, Bike, dance, garden…one that you will do! Start by starting!
From the words of Saint Francis of Assisi, ”Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible”.
