Have you ever played Pickleball? Franciscan Health Fitness Centers Schererville began to offer it in April 2016 after several of our members remarked on how much fun they had had playing it while on vacation.
Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and ping pong. Two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood, graphite/carbon or fiberglass to hit a whiffle ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis, with a few modifications. Pickleball was invented in the mid 1960s as a children's backyard pastime but quickly became popular among adults as a fun game for players of all levels. As of 2017 in a report from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, Pickleball has more than 2.815 million players within the U.S.
It is a great segue from the more exertive sports of Tennis and Racquetball for people who want to stay active but whose joint issues or age may be getting in their way. Franciscan Co-worker and avid pickleball player Cheri Reba says, "All levels, all ages, all capabilities are playing. The important thing is, you don't have to be an athlete to get out there and have fun. It's also a great opportunity for Members to meet and make new friends."
If you would be interested in playing or learning to play, we have Pickleball offered on our Court Schedules on Tuesdays and Thursdays and you can play on air-conditioned courts! Check out equipment from the Service Desk and see current Court Schedule for available days and times. Be sure to sign-up on the Bulletin Board so that other Members can connect with you for convenient play times. Rules are posted on the track and are also available at the Service Desk.
